Acrylic vs Gel vs Gel Polish: Which Nail Type Is Right for You?

Mae ChetcutiBy Mae Chetcuti6 April 20267 min read

Clients ask me this almost every day: "What's the difference between acrylic, gel, and gel polish?" The short answer is that they look similar but behave very differently. The right choice depends on your nail strength, your lifestyle, and how much maintenance you want to deal with.

I have been doing nails since I got my Nail Technician certification from System Unique in Malta. Here is what I tell every client who sits down in my chair unsure of which option to pick.

The Three Main Types

Before getting into the details, here is a quick overview of what each one actually is.

Acrylic nails are made by mixing a liquid monomer with a powder polymer. The mixture forms a hard, durable layer over your natural nail or a nail tip. They are the strongest option and the best choice if you want significant length.

Gel nails use a thick gel that gets cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp. They are lighter and more flexible than acrylics, with a glossy, natural-looking finish. They can also add length, but they work best at short to medium lengths.

Gel polish is a thin polish that also cures under a lamp. It goes directly onto your natural nail without adding length or thickness. Think of it as regular nail polish that lasts 2 to 3 weeks instead of 3 days.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Here is a straightforward comparison based on what I see with my own clients.

When I Recommend Acrylic Nails

Acrylics are the go-to when a client wants length and strength. If your natural nails are thin, soft, or break easily, acrylics give you a solid foundation to build on. They hold up well for people who work with their hands.

I also recommend acrylics for clients who want dramatic nail art or very long nails. The acrylic material holds shape better at longer lengths than gel does.

Good to know

Acrylic nails have a stronger smell during application because of the liquid monomer. The smell goes away once the nails are finished. If you are sensitive to strong scents, let your technician know so we can keep the room ventilated.

The downside: Acrylics are thicker and feel heavier than gel. Removal takes longer and needs to be done carefully. Peeling or ripping them off will damage your natural nail underneath. Always get them removed professionally.

When I Recommend Gel Nails

Gel nails are my recommendation for clients who want a natural-looking result with some added length. The finish is glossy and smooth, and they feel lighter on the nail than acrylics.

Gel is also more flexible, which means it is less likely to snap if you catch it on something. It bends slightly instead of cracking. For moderate length (not too long), gel gives a cleaner, more natural result.

The downside: Gel is not as strong as acrylic at longer lengths. If you want nails past a certain length, they are more prone to breaking. Gel also tends to cost slightly less than acrylic for the full set but lasts about the same amount of time.

When I Recommend Gel Polish

Gel polish is for clients who like their natural nail length but want colour that actually lasts. Regular polish chips within days. Gel polish stays put for 2 to 3 weeks with no chipping.

It is also the quickest appointment. A basic gel polish takes 45 minutes, compared to 1 hour 30 minutes for a full set of acrylics or gel nails. If you want something fast and low-maintenance, this is it.

I offer two gel polish options:

  • Basic Gel Polish: EUR 18 (45 min). Standard gel polish application.
  • Gelish with Builder: EUR 20 (1 hr). Adds a thin layer of builder gel under the colour for extra strength. Good if your nails tend to be weak but you do not want full extensions.

My recommendation

If you have never had nail services before, start with gel polish. It is the least commitment, the lowest cost, and it gives you a feel for what a salon nail treatment is like. You can always upgrade to gel or acrylic nails later.

How to Choose Based on Your Lifestyle

You work with your hands

Go with acrylic. It is the most durable and handles daily wear better than gel. Keep the length short to medium for practicality.

You want a natural look

Gel nails give the most natural finish with a subtle glossy sheen. They blend well with your real nails.

You want low maintenance

Gel polish. No infills needed, no length to manage. Just colour that lasts 2-3 weeks, then you remove and reapply.

You want maximum length

Acrylic is the only option that holds up well at very long lengths. Gel can do moderate length but gets fragile beyond that.

You are on a budget

Gel polish at EUR 18 is the most affordable option. No infill appointments in between either, so the ongoing cost is lower.

You have a special event

Either acrylic or gel nails for a full set with nail art. Both last 3-4 weeks, so time your appointment about a day before the event.

What About Removal?

This is where people get into trouble. All three types need to be removed properly.

Acrylic removal takes about 30 minutes. The nails are gently filed down. Do not pull them off. Ripping off acrylics tears layers of your natural nail with it.

Gel nail removal is similar, they are filed down. Some salons drill them off, which is fine when done by someone experienced, but aggressive filing can thin your natural nail.

Gel polish removal is the simplest. A 15-minute acetone soak and the polish peels away cleanly. Your natural nail should be in the same condition as before.

Do not peel your nails off

This applies to all three types. Peeling or picking at your nails when they start lifting will remove layers of your natural nail plate. It takes months for damaged nails to grow out. If a nail lifts or breaks, come in and we will fix it properly.

How Long Each Type Lasts

In my experience with clients in Malta:

  • Acrylic nails last 3 to 4 weeks before needing infills. The acrylic itself does not break down, but your natural nail grows out and creates a gap at the base.
  • Gel nails also last 3 to 4 weeks. Same growth issue. Infills close the gap and keep everything looking fresh.
  • Gel polish lasts 2 to 3 weeks. No infills needed. When it starts growing out, you remove and reapply.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gel nails better than acrylic?

Neither is objectively better. Gel nails are lighter, more flexible, and look more natural. Acrylic nails are stronger, hold up better at longer lengths, and are easier to repair. The right choice depends on what you want. If you value a natural look and feel, go with gel. If you need maximum durability or length, go with acrylic.

Can I switch from acrylic to gel nails?

Yes. Your old set needs to be fully removed first. Do not apply gel over existing acrylic. Once your natural nails are clean, you can get a gel set applied in the same appointment.

How often do I need infills?

Every 3 to 4 weeks for both acrylic and gel nails. Your natural nail grows about 3mm per month, which creates a visible gap at the cuticle area. Infills fill that gap and rebalance the nail. At Orden Beauty, acrylic infills are EUR 26 and gel infills are EUR 25.

Will acrylic or gel nails damage my natural nails?

Not if they are applied and removed correctly. Damage happens when nails are peeled off, removed aggressively, or applied by someone inexperienced. Professional application and removal keep your natural nails healthy. Proper aftercare matters for any beauty treatment, and the same principle applies to services like lash lifts.

What is builder gel?

Builder gel is a thicker gel that adds a layer of strength to your natural nail without adding length. It sits between regular gel polish and a full gel nail set. I use it in my Gelish with Builder service (EUR 20) for clients who want stronger nails without extensions.
